Daniel Joseph Kelly (1864-1901)
Son of Owen Kelly (b.1827) and Rose Horan (b.1837)
Born in Devenport Plymouth,  Devon in 1864
Joined the 13th Infantry Regiment (Somerset Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion) on 13 October 1879 at Kemptee, near Nagpur, India. He served as a boy soldier till he was made a private at 18 years of age. He was made a corporal on 2nd December 1885.  He partook in the 3rd Burma Campaign, 1885-1887. Became a sergeant in 1887.  when the regiment returned to India from Burma. .  Married Ada Henderson (1871-1936) at St Andrew’s Church, Madras on 6 April 1887.The 13th Infantry Regiment returned to England in 1888.  In August 1888 he joined the Commissariat Department.  In 1894 and he joined the 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment  (22nd Foot).
Daniel and Ada had 6 children
There was an encephalitis epidemic in Madras in 1901 and many servicemen in the Cheshire Regiment dies from it.  Daniel died of encephalitis on 9 August 1901 together with two of their children (see below) (encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain caused by a bacterial infection). Daniel is buried at St John the Baptist Church, Madras.

(ii) Rose Mary Kelly (1892-1948) Married Thomas Tubbs (Captain in the ‘Green Howards’) 

(iii) Charles Edward Kelly (1893-1961), born in Rangoon 30 May 1893, Died in Perth, Sydney, Australia 26 January, 1961. Married Kathleen Eileen O’Kelly (1897-1984) Had four children Barbara Kelly (1925-1998), Lionel Desmond Kelly (b.1927), Noel Raymond Patrick Kelly (b.1931), Yvonne Kelly (b.1938) and Averil Kelly (b.1942) 

(iv) Agnes Maud (Tootsie) Kelly (1897-1976). Born 22 July 1897, married Daniel Percival William Bailey. They had five children

(v) Daniel Joseph Kelly (1899-1901). Died of encephalitis in August 1901

(vi) Millicent Jessie Kelly (1901-1901), born on 26 June 1901. Baptised on 13 July 1901 at the Church of St John the Baptist at Poona. Died of encephalitis in July 1901
